I had that album. Used to like it quite a bit, actually, but I think it disappeared down the ex-husband black hole.

Brilliant.

I think what I like most about the thing is she doesn’t seem to give a rat’s ass who might take her as too earnest, pretentious, naive, whateverinhell they might happen to whine about. It’s just: this is what I’m gonna do. This is what I got. Here’s the contract: I may, in fact, do an entire track which happens to be about my various ex-boyfriends with cliche little string fills, and while we both know I thereby risk just being incredibly inane thereby, I’ll try to keep it honest, give it all I got, and who knows… So listen if you like… And since she’s taking it just seriously enough, it generally works. And frequently, it’s just perfect. Scratches these weird itches.

It’s a pleasant surprise, actually, after the previous disk blowing the doors off half a dozen longstanding records, that somehow she pulled this off. I can imagine any number of vastly less satisfying endings to that story, what with stardom on that level having frequently driven the relatively young stark raving mad. 24 years old, and somehow she keeps it together, just does her thing anyway, makes this weirdly lovely thing. Beyond impressive.
